Ornamental Aluminum Wrought Iron Style Fence

4 board post and rail fence

Board Fence is usually a 3 or 4 board layout with 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 post assembled from either smooth or rough sawn pressure teated wood. Horizontal fence rails are typically full 1 inch thick by 6 inch wide lumber but can be conventional 2 x 6 lumber as purchased from a big  box store. Normal finished height is 48 inches, but a 4 board “post and rail” fence can be stretched up to 5 ft. tall without it looking odd.

BOARD FENCE; desired for it's rural look, charm, and structural integrity. This fence is very popular with owners of country mountain cabin getaways and accepted by their HOA / BOA representatives.

To the left and above are examples of board and post fences using a “smooth on all 4 sides” wood,  below are examples of the same type of 4 rail board fence using rough sawn wood to build the fence.

All fence post are secured in concrete or gravel, and all of the wood members are fastened together using corrosive resistant wood screws to prevent the sun and weather from pulling the fence apart over time

PASTURE FENCING:
An all time favorite for rural farm and ranch land. Beautiful in form and function, this classic fence style will live forever in the hearts and minds of all Americans as a symbol of small town country life USA.

Here is a 4 board fence using the same rough sawn wood pictured above for the pasture fence, in a residential setting. Black vinyl coated welded wire is attached to the back side of this fence for pet control and the wood has been stained black.

4 Board with 4x4 Woven Lamb / Goat wire field fence fabric

Below  I used Lamb / Goat wire which has a 4” x 4” opening between the horizontal and vertical wires. This wire comes in 330 foot rolls and is very economical and is as strong as the other woven wire fabric like horse and hog wire. Unless you have really small dogs or you are trying to keep rabbits out of your garden, this less expensive 4” x 4” goat wire is ideal for fencing in a medium to large size dog and preventing entry by predators.

Rough Sawn Pressure Treated true 1” X 6” horizontal fence rails and 4” X 6” post with 1 x 6 vertical appearance boards covering all seams. This fence has 4 x 4 Lamb / Goat wire field fence fabric stretched tightly and fastened to one side. This fence can be left in this natural condition or stained and sealed with a good wood preservative.

3 and 4 board fencing maintains the country look of your rural property and blends into the natural surroundings. By adding a “wire field fence fabric” to the back side of the fence during construction, the field fence will serve as an effective deterrent to keep predators and wildlife off of your property and keep pets safely at home.

There are three types of wire fencing fabric that I use on board and post fence for pet containment and I have attempted to explain the benefits of each one below.

2x4 welded wire

2x4 WELDED WIRE:
This is a 14 or 12.5 gauge galvanized light weight fabric with 2 inch wide by 4 inch high spaces between the wires. This is the least expensive of the wire fence options.
This product is also available with a white, black, or green vinyl coated finish which can add a more polished look to the final project outcome.

The down side to this product is how easily it cuts when hit with a weed eater. This is not a concern when the fence runs through a wooded area and no grass trimming or fence line clearing of weeds is required. An aggressive animal can yank back and forth repeatedly with their teeth and quickly break through this product. Where the wires overlap are “welded” together and this weld breaks very easily.

2x4 woven horse fence

2x4 WOVEN HORSE WIRE:
This is a 12.5 gauge heavy duty fence fabric designed with 2 x 4 inch spacing to prevent a horses hooves from slipping through the opening and getting trapped and hurt.

Notice how the individual wires are fastened together with another piece of wire actually woven around each junction where the vertical and horizontal wires intersect, this woven union creates a very strong fence fabric.

This wire fence will last over 100 years if properly installed and maintained. Very difficult to cut, bend, or break.

4x4 woven lamb fence

4x4 WOVEN GOAT WIRE:
Also known as lamb or sheep fence, it is the same heavy duty construction as the woven horse wire with larger 4 inch square spacing between the wires and is more than adequate for most medium to large dogs, and is less expensive than the 2x4 woven “no climb” horse wire.

This fence will keep coyotes and most predatory animals away and is the most affordable of all the fence options shown here.

If not abused by machine or beast, a fence like this should last over 100 years.
